46 Canberra community organisations have been approved a total of almost $90,000 under the latest round of the Australian Government's Volunteer Small Equipment Grants program.

Announcing the grants today, ACT Liberal Senator Gary Humphries said the amount of interest in the scheme was fantastic.

"This program provides up to $3000 for volunteering groups, helping to make their work easier, safer and more enjoyable," Senator Humphries said.

"Organisations will use this money for items such as furniture, computers, digital cameras and barbeques; equipment these organisations may not have otherwise been able to afford.

"The ACT has the highest rate of volunteers in Australia with over one third of its adult population volunteering regularly. They are, and will continue to be, vital in supporting families and building local communities," he said.

Organisations to receive funding this round include:

• Canberra City Lions Club - $2,500 for a portable generator • Lake Burley Griffin Sea Scouts - $1,900 for portable shades • Canberra Riding Club (Pony Club) - $1,000 for a public address system • Old Narrabundah Community Council - $2,728 for a ride-on mower
