Improving Defence Financial Management

The Minister for Defence, John Moore, today announced that he has established a new external committee to recommend improvements to financial management throughout Defence in coming months.

"The Defence Reform Committee will recommend to Government improved financial management arrangements and advise on the current efficiency of Defence in delivering outputs to government," Mr Moore said.

"The Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Mr Max Moore-Wilton, will chair. In addition, I have appointed two eminent business representatives, Mr Tony Sherlock and Mr Graham Kelly, to provide expert advice from a private sector perspective.

Other members of the Committee are the Chief of the Defence Force, Admiral Chris Barrie, Secretary for Defence, Dr Allan Hawke, Secretary to the Treasury, Mr Ted Evans, and Secretary of the Department of Finance and Administration, Dr Peter Boxall.

"In concert with the changes announced on Monday 26th June by Dr Hawke and Admiral Barrie, the Defence Reform Committee’s work on improved financial management will complete the next critical step of Defence reform and improvement in Defence," said Mr Moore.

"In the lead-up to the White Paper, it is critical that Defence has the full confidence of Government and the community in terms of its financial management and accountability."

The newly formed Defence Improvement Committee will oversee implementation of decisions flowing from recommendations of the Defence Reform Committee.
