10 August 2004 A89/2004

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, today announced that he has approved the draft Master Plan for Perth Airport.

The Commonwealth signed a lease with Westralia Airports Limited (WAC) on 2 July 1997 for the Perth Airport site. The lease is for a term of 50 years, with an option to renew the lease for a further term of 49 years.

Each operator of a leased Federal airport, such as Perth Airport, is required to submit a master plan for the Minister's approval under the Airports Act 1996. The preliminary draft went to public consultation for 90 days (January to April 2004). The operator of Perth Airport, WAC, put forward a draft master plan, which includes:

● passenger and aircraft traffic forecasts indicating that a new parallel runway or runway extension will not be

necessary over the next 20 years; ● details of agreements for cooperation with state and local governments in the vicinity of the airport;

● plans for development of commercial precincts;

● management strategy for the protection of flora and fauna in conservation precincts;

● commitment to noise management through the Noise Management Strategy Committee;

● development of the airport as a transport hub, including terminal expansion.

The Airport lessee company must publish the Final Master Plan within 90 days of approval, and make copies of the Final Master Plan available to the public.
