Organ's honoured role in history - Brown

11th Oct 2004

Michael Organ has an honoured place in Australian electoral history, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"Michael was the first Green in the House of Representatives. He will be followed by many more," Senator Brown said in Canberra.

"He has shown that winning House of Representatives seats is possible for third parties and he has removed the previous psychological barrier built up by some high-profile failed attempts by Democrats and others.

"Michael was a hard working local Member for Cunningham."

Senator Brown said the national Greens' vote will improve with absentee and postal votes and distribution of below-the-line preferences in the Senate.

"We reckon the sixth Queensland and Western Australia senate seats will go the Greens and, in South Australia, it's anyone's guess," Senator Brown said.
