PRIME MINISTER

INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF INTELLIGENCE AND SECURITY

Mr Bill Blick PSM has retired from the position of Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security.

Mr Blick was the Inspector-General from 1998, serving with distinction and providing balanced and professional oversight of a range of sensitive and complex matters. I thank him for his dedication as Inspector-General, and for his outstanding service to government and to the Australian Public Service over the past 36 years. I wish him all the best for the future.

The Governor-General has agreed to appoint Mr Ian Carnell as the new Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security.

Mr Carnell was most recently Deputy Secretary of Criminal Justice and Security at the Attorney-General’s Department. He joined the Attorney-General’s Department in 1998, where he worked on a range of national security, intelligence, law enforcement and criminal justice issues. Mr Carnell has had a distinguished career in the Australian Public Service, having also worked in senior positions in the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and in Centrelink.
