Alexander Downer

Minister for Foreign Affairs

10 May 1999

I wish to express the Australian Government’s deep regret over the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade and the resulting loss of life.

I also offer my sincere condolences to the Chinese Government - the bombing of the Embassy was a tragic accident for which NATO and the United States Government have both apologised.

The Australian Government hopes all parties will show restraint in their reactions to this incident, as urged by Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao in his public statement on 9 May.

In all of this, it must be remembered that NATO’s action is aimed at stopping human rights atrocities in Kosovo.
