MORE PROJECTS APPROVED FOR INDIGENOUS EDUCATION! MEDIA RELEASE Friday, 20 January 2006

Further to his announcement earlier this week Canning MHR Don Randall today congratulated Armadale Senior and Cecil Andrews Senior High Schools who received a total of 25,838 in funding to improve the educational outcomes of Indigenous students.

Mr Randall was delighted that the projects would become a reality thanks to the Whole of School Intervention Strategy funding.

A funding program administered by the Department of Education Science and Training focuses on implementing creative ways to improve Indigenous students’ attendance, literacy and numeracy skills, retention from Years 10 to 12 and Year 12 completions.

The programme also encourages schools, Indigenous parents and communities to work together in a partnership to achieve these outcomes.

“Armadale and Cecil Andrews now have a greater opportunity to engage their indigenous students within the school and community,” said Mr Randall.

In addition to the programs already confirmed, Cecil Andrews Senior High has received $5,456 to conduct a Homework Centre.

With the assistance of Armadale Community Family Centre Inc, the supportive learning environment for the Year 8 to 12 students will operate 2 afternoons per week and aims to develop students study skills and effective work habits.

Armadale Senior High School has received $20,382 to conduct their Homework Centre with the assistance of Armadale Youth Resources.

Providing a supportive learning environment, students will be supervised to complete homework, time management activities, file organisation and self esteem building activities.

“I once again congratulate these schools and the organisations that will assist them with their programs. I am confident they will be very successful.” Mr Randall said.
