"The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's latest Survey of Small Business highlights the negative impact the GST is having on small business confidence", Labor's spokesperson for Small Business, Joel Fitzgibbon said today.

"In the minds of small business people, the GST has well and truly overtaken the Asian economic crisis as the largest recent threat to profitability.

"High compliance costs-particularly those associated with the Business Activity Statement-lower sales figures, and the inability to pass on the GST are creating a nightmare environment for small businesses.

"Labor warned of the impact of forcing small business people to become unpaid tax collectors, and John Howard has paid the political price in Western Australia and Queensland.

"The Government must immediately move to ease the burden of the GST by making substantial changes to reporting systems and consider mechanisms for compensating small firms for the impact of the GST," Mr Fitzgibbon said.
