Tuesday, 22 August 2006

John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee said today that the Mallee electorate would receive Australian Government funding of $39,827,298 Financial Assistance Grants in 2006-07 for local roads and the provision of other local government

services, representing a 7.88% increase from last financial year. “These local Government Financial Assistance Grants help councils to provide the high quality services that local communities need and expect of their local council,” said Mr Forrest. “These grants are untied so local council can allocate the funds according to local priorities.” “Funds are used by councils to provide a range of health, community, recreational, cultural and environmental services and to provide and maintain infrastructure such as roads.” “They are part of the ongoing assistance the Australian Government has provided to local communities for more than 30 years.” “Nationally, the Australian Government has allocated $1.684 billion in financial assistance grants to local government, with Victorian councils receiving 23.5 per cent of the national total,” Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads, Jim Lloyd said. ‘The Australian Government has increased financial assistance grants funding to local government for 2006-07 by $67.4 million over 2005-06, bringing the total increase in funding to local government to around $520 million since the Coalition came to office in 1996,” Mr Lloyd said. The grants are paid under the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995, with the first quarterly payment expected on 15 August 2006.
