T3 FLOAT: MINCHIN KISSES ANOTHER $20 MILLION IN TAXPAYER FUNDS GOODBYE

29 September 2006

Today’s announcement by the Federal Government that it will be spending 20 million taxpayer dollars on an advertising blitz to sell to the public its own asset has been labelled as “unprecedented” by Labor’s Waste Watch Chair and Prospect MP Chris Bowen.

“This is a blatant and outrageous waste of taxpayer dollars,” Mr Bowen said.

“This is an unprecedented amount spent selling a float in Australia - by a government or private company.

“The Federal Government has long gone past Coca-Cola as the nation’s highest spending advertiser with over $1.5 billion spent, and here is another $20 million about to be thrown away.

“$20 million would be much better spent addressing some of the regional employment problems being experienced in south-western Sydney where the unemployment rate currently stands at 11%.

“The Howard Government should rescind this crazy decision to fill our airways, newspapers and World Wide Web with $20 million of advertising."
