HON. SIMON CREAN MP Shadow Minister for Regional Development

8 November 2005

Today in the House of Representatives Tony Abbott failed to defend the National Party against evidence that it has rorted the Regional Partnerships program.

Instead, during today’s Matter of Public Importance debate, Mr Abbott conceded the Regional Partnerships program had funded “disappointing projects.”

The MPI debate proposed by the government to defend its record gained only lukewarm support from the Health Minister.

In response to my criticism of rorting Mr Abbott said:

“Yes, as the Member for Hotham has pointed out, there have been a handful of disappointing projects.”

A big handful, Tony.

Mr Abbott’s ministerial record shows he is shameless.

But he is not shameless enough to defend the National Party against evidence of pork barrelling on a grand scale.

I now invite Mr Abbott to join Labor in calling for the adoption of the Senate inquiry recommendations to clean up the rorts.
