Press Release Ref: 888 Published: 23/1/2003 Title: New Aboriginal Training Centre for Mogo

A new Aboriginal Training Centre will be established at Mogo following the approval of a $259,000 grant from the Federal Government.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, and Boomerang Meeting Place Chairman, Tom Slockee have today jointly announced the funding for the Walbunga Aboriginal Skills Centre.

Mr Nairn said this will give the local community more options when it comes to employment training.

Mr Slockee said he was delighted by the funding approval.

“I want to applaud Gary Nairn and the Federal Government for supporting such an important project for the Eurobodalla region,” he said.

“I also thank the NSW Department of Education and Training for their co-operation in managing the administration of the project.”

The Walbunga Aboriginal Skills Centre will be located between the Mogo Public School and the existing Boomerang Meeting Place in Church Street, will offer a range of courses including horticulture through credited trainer, Campbell Page Employment and Training in Batemans Bay.

It will include several separate training areas with a strong emphasis on outdoor facilities to create a Koori-friendly learning environment.

“Stuart Whitelaw from local architectural firm Whitelaw Associates has done a great job on the design,” Mr Slockee added.

Construction is expected to begin by the middle of this year.

It’s anticipated that training will commence at the beginning of 2004.

“I look forward to seeing the Centre up and running in 2004,” Mr Nairn concluded.

Ends…Friday, 24 January, 2003.
