Funding secured for JCU Veterinary School

The James Cook University Veterinary Science and Tropical Agriculture School is a step closer to reality with the Senate tonight approving $26 million in funding for the project.

Taking the legislation through the Senate on behalf of Education Minister Dr Brenden Nelson, Australian Government Minister, and north Queensland-based Senator Ian Macdonald, said 100 places would be operational by next year, and by 2009 undergraduate numbers will rise to 274 places, at a cost of $13.9 million

"The establishment of the new veterinary science and tropical agriculture school,l and undergraduate courses will help position James Cook University as a global leader in teaching and research in these fields," Senator Macdonald said.

"Aside from enhancing the north's reputation as a quality education provider, it further cements Australia's international reputation in the agriculture sector.

"The funding provided to James Cook University through this Bill reflects the Australian Government's recognition of the unique contribution regional higher education institutions make to their local communities, for students from rural and regional areas, and to our national prosperity."

In the debate in the Senate, Senator Macdonald argued against amendments by the Labor Party which would have delayed passage of the funding authorising Bill.

Senator Macdonald paid tribute to the University Vice Chancellor Bernard Moulden and his team, as well as to Federal Member for Herbert Peter Lindsay for their advocacy for the new school.

"The passage tonight of the Bill in the Senate has honoured the commitment made by the Prime Minister prior to the last election," Senator Macdonald said.
