The Hon Dr Sharman Stone MP

Shadow Minister for Environment, Heritage, the Arts and Indigenous Affairs

Fri, 8th February 2008

Shadow Minister for Environment, Heritage, the Arts and Indigenous Affairs, Dr Sharman Stone, has condemned the

Minister, Peter Garrett, for failing once again to defend arts funding long committed by the Howard Government to raising

the international profile of Australia’s performing artists.

“Kevin Rudd proclaimed during the election campaign that his government would boost music industry grants in

particular, for international marketing”, Dr Stone said.

“So far, after just 10 weeks in government, Mr Rudd has cancelled the international touring support the Howard

Government established and yesterday he axed any government contribution to Chamber Music Australia (CMA).

CMA organises the acclaimed Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and master classes.

“These events have earned the respect of the global chamber music community and have given local musicians an

opportunity to compete and compare their performance with the best in the world.

“There seems to be a sad pattern emerging.

“In Opposition, Mr Garrett loudly urged more funding for Australian artists and music. His first actions and only actions so

far, as the Minister responsible for the Arts have been to see funds fall to Labor’s razor gang.

“Australia’s arts community remains on the edge of its seat waiting to see what’s next as the new Arts Minister fails to

defend them”, Dr Stone said..
