BOOST FOR WA HIGH-CARE REHABILITATION PATIENTS

Patients in WA will have improved access to quality rehabilitation care under a 2009-10 Budget proposal to replace the state’s rehabilitation unit, with a new facility at the Fiona Stanley Hospital.

The Rudd Government is providing $255.7 million over six years for a new State Rehabilitation Centre, comprising approximately 140 beds.

The centre will increase the quality, sustainability and efficiency of rehabilitation services in WA and ensure the right care is provided in the right place for patients.

It will enable more efficient use of resources through links with the Fiona Stanley Hospital for those patients needing high-level rehabilitation care. Lower level rehabilitation care will be provided at other hospitals in WA.

This proposal is supported under the Australian Government's nation-building Health and Hospitals Fund, which is building health infrastructure for the 21st century, while also creating employment opportunities.

The project will directly involve jobs in the local construction industry and help to stimulate the local economy.

This project is expected to be completed in 2014.
