Government Abandons Indigenous Family Violence Program Bob McMullan - Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

Media Statement - 28 June 2001

Reports today that a three year Commonwealth funded pilot, the Family Violence Advocacy Project, for Indigenous communities in North Queensland is to be abandoned, could not have come at a worse time, Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Bob McMullan, said today.

"At a time when community concern about Indigenous rape and violence is at a peak the Government is abandoning an Indigenous family violence program in Far North Queensland," Mr McMullan said.

"I am extremely concerned that a successful Indigenous family violence program for communities in Cape York will close its doors today because of a lack of ongoing Commonwealth support.

"It is typical of this Government's short sighted approach that they would fund a pilot for three years without any ongoing plans to address the serious issue of Indigenous family violence.

"Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Philip Ruddock, has belatedly been reported as saying that he will 'review family violence funding to indigenous communities'.

"The Government has had three years to 'review' this program.

Government inaction will leave sixteen Far North Queensland communities without an appropriate family violence service.

"Minister Ruddock has an opportunity to act while attention is being focused on the serious issue of rape and violence in Indigenous communities.

"I have offered bipartisan support to action by the Government on this serious issue of rape and violence in Indigenous communities - not rhetoric," Mr McMullan said. Authorised by Geoff Walsh, 19 National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600.
