HOWARD GOVERNMENT FAILING ON INFRASTRUCTURE

The Howard Government’s policy paralysis on infrastructure is failing future generations, Martin Ferguson told the AusCID Annual Conference in Canberra today.

Leadership is required to deliver on infrastructure on all fronts - transport, energy, water and telecommunications.

The private sector stands ready. They are willing and able to play a role in leveraging projects that will improve access to critical services expected by our community.

The Howard Government has no strategy to tackle Australia’s deplorable infrastructure backlog.

Labor, however, has a dedicated infrastructure Cabinet portfolio to drive infrastructure outcomes.

Labor is committed to combining the resources, skills and expertise of the public and private sectors to deliver outcomes for the community.

After six years, the blinkers are only just coming off the Howard Government on transport infrastructure but it is only one part of the infrastructure challenge.

There continues to be no evidence that the Howard Government is committed to fixing the barriers to effective public private infrastructure delivery partnerships.

The sooner they get on with it, the sooner Australia will reap the rewards through the new jobs, development and services that are there to be generated.
