World First Men's Telephone Counselling Service Celebrates First Anniversary 28 October 2002

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Family and Community Services, Ross Cameron, today celebrated Men's Line Australia's, first anniversary by announcing $200 000 in increased funding.

"Over the last 12 months Men's Line Australia has done a great job in providing much needed telephone counselling and referral services to men across the country to help them combat suicide, depression and other problems," Mr Cameron said.

"It has proved to be a very popular Government initiative that provides services to men in a way that they feel comfortable accessing.

"In its first twelve months of operation Men's Line Australia responded to more than 11 000 requests for assistance from members of the public.

"The service is user friendly providing affordable, accessible and anonymous services to men facing crisis or simply looking for someone to talk to about their family relationships.

"Men from all across Australia have contacted Men's Line Australia, but the service has particular value for men in rural and regional areas, many of who now for the first time have access to a relationship support service designed specifically for their needs.

"Men's Line Australia was the first national telephone counselling service for men in the world. While we believed there was a need for the service we had no way of knowing what the demand would be.

"Care Ring (Personal Emergency Services Inc), located in Melbourne, has now been funded more than $1.8 million over three years to run Men's Line Australia.

"The additional $200 000 in funding will be used by Men's Line Australia to employ additional counsellors and to help it increase it's funding from the community.

"For the cost of a local call on landline telephone services men around Australia can contact Men's Line Australia on 1300 78 99 78 or visit their website at www.menslineaus.org.au."
