Bob Brown, Senator for Tasmania

Franklin River praise

29th Jan 05

The Franklin River’s wild and scenic quality is still under-rated in Tasmania, a happy Greens Senator Bob Brown said today after his first rafting trip on the river for 23 years.

“This is a world rarity, one of the planet’s 5 or 10 great wilderness rafting trips.

“The Great Ravine, rapids, waterfalls, canyons, forests and eagles are a stunning complex of visual splendour.

“It would have been rendered dead and unattractive by the dam”, Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown took the 10-day Franklin rafting expedition with World Expeditions.

“Going from the one-person rubber duckies to the modern five-person rafts is like going from a puffing billy to an express train”, Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown first rafted the Franklin with forester Paul Smith in 1976 and repeated the trip annually until 1982.
