Greens express condolences to family and friends of the Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan

9th Oct 07

Greens Leader Bob Brown today expressed condolences on behalf of the Greens to the family and friends of the Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan. “This is an absolute tragedy. The loss of this man to his family and friends is incalculable and this nation will honour forever his commitment and their loss,” Senator Brown said. “Australia should be providing civil aid and powering reconstruction in both Afghanistan and Iraq, but our defence forces should be redeployed in our own region from East Timor through to the Solomon Islands,” Senator Brown said. The United States Studies Centre (USSC) at the University of Sydney recently released polling that found exactly half (50%) of Australians were opposed to both the US and Australian military presence in Afghanistan, despite bi-partisan political support in Canberra. Nearly two-thirds of respondents were opposed to the US involvement in Iraq (62%) and the Australian involvement in Iraq (64%). Further information: Ebony Bennett 0409 164 603
