$41 Million Upgrade for HMAS Albatross

The Minister for Defence, John Moore, has announced additional funding of $41 million for further upgrading of Naval Air Station, Nowra.

"This project gives the green light to the second stage of redevelopment work already underway at HMAS Albatross," Mr Moore said. "It has the potential to create an additional 100 jobs in the local area over the next 18 months.

"The investment in improved infrastructure at the Base is another significant injection of Federal Government funding into the area," said Mr Moore. "The Federal Member for Gilmore, Joanna Gash, has been a vigorous supporter of the upgrade program at HMAS Albatross, and her representations have delivered better employment opportunities for local people.

"From the Navy’s perspective, extension of shore support at HMAS Albatross - the Navy’s only air station - is essential to accommodate the operational, administrative, training and logistic growth of naval aviation," Mr Moore said.

The most recent approval covers facilities and services to upgrade:

Existing arrestor gear for fixed-wing aircraft using the main runway; ● Helicopter corrosion control and aircraft wash facilities; ● Flight deck procedural training simulators; ● Additional hard-stand for visiting military aircraft; ●

Helicopter underwater escape training simulator; ● Gymnasium; ● Taxiway extension; ●

Helicopter ordnance loading apron; and ● Perimeter fencing and engineering services. ●

These works continue the redevelopment of HMAS Albatross. Stage 1 represented a $69 million investment. This seamless approach to the transition from Stage 1 to Stage 2 reduces costs and means that work can be finished at the earliest possible date. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
