If only Mayor Mooney had tried Thursday, 28 April 2005

The successful purchase of land at Pooh corner has highlighted the difference between “Can do” Campbell Newman and “Won’t do” Tony Mooney. When a large parcel of sensitive bushland known as “pooh corner” was put out to tender by the Federal Government, the Brisbane Liberal Lord Mayor Campbell Newman left no stone unturned to arrange a priority sale to the Council. 138 hectares of land was purchased by the Brisbane City Council and will now remain in public ownership for the future enjoyment of the residents of Brisbane. Cr Newman worked constructively with my Federal colleagues Michael Johnson and Teresa Gambaro to win this great result. Disappointingly Mayor Mooney would not work with me to save the Pallarenda land. The Townsville City Council was advised more than two years ago that the Australian Communications Authority intended to sell land it owned at Pallarenda. Representatives of the Authority twice contacted the Council and were told that the Council had no concerns about the sale. Although I was never in the position to know the land was to be sold, the Mayor was and did nothing. He took no action. He did not contact me to ask for my help to stop the sale. He waited until it was too late to do anything. He has not done the job that Townsville ratepayers expect of him.
