Greens will move for Senate Inquiry into Haneef scandal

24th Jul 07

Australian Greens Senator Kerry Nettle will move to establish a Senate Inquiry into the scandal surrounding the criminal investigation and visa cancellation of Dr Haneef if an independent inquiry is not established by the time parliament sits.

“A Senate Inquiry is an opportunity to clear the air,” Senator Nettle said.

“The AFP has a tarnished reputation, and Minister Andrews used incorrect information when cancelling Dr Haneef’s visa may have used his powers for a political purpose.

“As it stands, allegations surrounding the AFP investigation and Minister Andrews visa cancellation, need to be explained and investigated”, Senator Nettle said.

The Senate will resume sitting in two weeks.
