Peter Byrne appointed as National Farm Forestry Coordinator

Federal Forestry and Conservation Minister Senator Ian Macdonald announced that Mr Peter Byrne has been appointed as the inaugural National Farm Forestry Coordinator.

The Minister said the appointment runs until the end of 2003, and would help ensure the sector capitalises on the significant successes achieved over the past five year’s under the Coalition Government’s Natural Heritage Trust.

“As National Coordinator, Mr Byrne will ensure farm forestry issues receive the prominence they deserve, and that the sector’s stakeholders are better represented at the national level,” Senator Macdonald said. “One of his key roles will be to coordinate a network of Regional Plantation Committees throughout Australia.

“Mr Byrne has a long and distinguished career in forestry, most recently as Manager of the Queensland Department of Primary Industry’s Forest Industry Services area. He is highly respected within the private forestry sector and has already made a valuable contribution to a number of national initiatives, including Plantations for Australia: the 2020 Vision.”

Senator Macdonald said the idea for a National Coordinator was proposed by the Farm Forestry Roundtable in its final report on strategic directions for the sector, and was made possible with a $200,000 grant from the Natural Heritage Trust’s Farm Forestry Program.

“In proposing the concept of a coordinator, the Roundtable saw a particular need to address low-rainfall, farm forestry issues,” he said.

The Minister also expressed a hope that the States would contribute to the position and acknowledged a commitment

by the Queensland Government to provide support for Mr Byrne in the performance of his new role.

“The plantation industry, especially the smaller growers, are facing a number of significant challenges,” he said. “One of the keys to overcoming these challenges is building strong and constructive relationships between community, industry and government.

“An independent voice, looking at issues from a national perspective, and working collaboratively with all stakeholders, represents the best way of achieving this.

“Moreover, farm forestry has an important role to play in addressing many of Australia’s pressing natural resource management issues. Part of Mr Byrne’s job will be to communicate what the sector has to offer and how it can help enhance our environment.

“I congratulate Mr Byrne on his appointment and wish him every success.”
