The Indian Ocean Territories will receive over $700,000 over four years as part of the Federal Government’s $1.2 billion Local Roads to Recovery programme, the Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald, announced today.

Speaking from Cocos Island, where he is providing the Government’s response to local consultations held prior to last year’s Northern Australia Forum , Senator Macdonald said road funding was a major concern for the Indian Ocean Territories.

“The announcement today meets key concerns expressed at those consultations and allows Christmas and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to be included in the road funding boost and demonstrates the Government’s willingness to listen to the communities concerned.”

“Christmas Island will receive $452,827 and Cocos (Keeling) Island $183,326, in total over the next four years. An initial $56,604 is available this financial year for Christmas Island and $22,916 for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands " Senator Macdonald said.

“The funding can be used on the Territories’ priorities for upgrading, repairing and maintaining local roads in the Islands.

“The respective Territory administrations need to Lodge details of their proposed works with Government in the same way as other councils to receive their Roads to Recovery funding.

“Roads to Recovery funding will complement other initiatives by the Government to encourage growth in these regions, such as the proposed Economic Development Commission for the Indian Ocean Territories,” Senator Macdonald said.

“This announcement demonstrates the Howard Government’s commitment to working toward equitable service delivery for the Indian Ocean Territories.”
