Wynnum Family Day Care shows Federal Families Minister what it's all about

Tuesday, 1 August 2006

The Federal Families Minister, Mal Brough, was treated to a hands-on experience in the Bayside last week when Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta, hosted a special morning tea for Carers and children from Wynnum Family Day Care.

The Carers and children stormed Mr Vasta’s electorate office to meet and personally speak with Minister Brough whose portfolio responsibility includes child care and Family Day Care.

“The meeting was a great success and we managed to create a very natural, relaxed environment. The children were able to just play while Carers had the opportunity to speak to the Minister about the industry and what the Government could be doing to better support and promote Family Day Care,” said Mr Vasta.

“Family Day Care is a family friendly child care option and it is also an excellent small business career opportunity for mothers wanting to get back into the workforce but still maintain time with their own family.

“Manager of Wynnum Family Day Care, Cathy Bavage, has worked extremely hard for many years to help the industry grow and she is committed to making sure the government assists in the process,” said Mr Vasta.

Carers raised the primary need for more support and education on how to operate the small business side of Family Day Care in terms of what records to keep and what claims can be made.

Mr Vasta said the idea of a small business starter kit was canvassed and that the Minister was extremely supportive of the suggestion.

“The Minister was grateful for the feedback and I think he felt very welcomed by even the children who in the end were climbing onto his knee and begging him to ‘come and play’!,” said Mr Vasta.

“I think it’s important that we as a community continue to support and promote Family Day Care and I’m delighted that the Minister was able to see first-hand the healthy environment that it creates for children,” said Mr Vasta.
