Box Hill school community to benefit from $4.2 million upgrade

15 May 2007

The Federal Minister for Vocational and Further Education, the Hon Andrew Robb AO MP, opened an Advanced Manufacturing Design Skill Centre and upgraded school facilities worth $4.2 million at Box Hill Senior Secondary College in Victoria yesterday.

The project includes state-of-the-art specialist facilities for fashion, jewellery, multi-media, video production, extensive digital facilities for photography, an extension to the library, refurbishment of the administration area, the instalment of a commercial kitchen in the hospitality area and new staff facilities.

“The funding is part of the Howard government’s commitment to raising the status of technical training so students will be proud to take on an apprenticeship and move into the trades,” Mr. Robb said.

“The school is creating an environment where students who are technically gifted have a pathway to a high quality technical education.”

The Australian Government contributed $2.5 million for this project and the school community should be commended for its contribution of $170,000 while the State Government provided $1.5 million. They can now offer expanded access to quality teaching resources to their 660 students.

“This school has a proud history of strong technical training from its beginnings back in 1943 as a technical school and I am proud to say this focus continues today,” Mr Robb said.

The Skill Centre received $99,977 in Australian Government funding for the purchase of equipment through the National Training Infrastructure Programme and the school contributed $30,000. This brings the total Australian government contribution to Box Hill secondary College to nearly $3.5 million over the last ten years.

The Government has allocated an estimated $9.3 billion for Australian schools and students in 2006-07. This includes an estimated $897.1 million for capital works and infrastructure grants.
