Flood report - PM not off the hook - Brown

The release of the Flood Report into Australia’s intelligence confirms that the Government misled Australia on Iraq. The report highlights the need for a Royal Commission into the decision to go to war, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

“Like the US and UK inquiries Mr Flood has confirmed a failure of intelligence but avoids laying the blame where it should lie - at the Prime Minister’s door”, Senator Brown said.

“The fact that Australia’s intelligence was more cautious and qualified than that of the US and UK makes John Howard’s unqualified claims on WMD and the decision for war all the more reprehensible.

“The changes to intelligence arrangements fail to address the fundamental problem which is the Prime Minister leading Australia to war on a lie.”

“The report even recommends that the Prime Minister’s Department plays a greater role in setting policy for intelligence. This will do nothing to address the Australian people’s concern that the government misused intelligence to bolster its decision to back George Bush’s illegal invasion.

“The report claims there was no political interference but that misses the point. John Howard took the cautious claims of intelligence agencies and exaggerated them.

“The PM is not off the hook: we need a Royal Commission,” Senator Brown said.
