SENATOR KERRY O’BRIEN SHADOW MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT

AUSTRALIAN MADE CAR LEADS IN SAFETY 19 October 2006

"The Toyota Aurion V6 launched today in Canberra has set a new safety benchmark for Australian produced cars," said Senator O'Brien, Shadow Minister for Transport.

"Standard safety features on the Toyota Aurion V6 include electronic stability control, dual front and side SRS airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, B-pillar reinforcement and reinforced steel roof cross sections - safety features proven to save lives.

"Having these safety features standard on all Aurion V6 models will mean that more Australian drivers will have access to safer cars to drive.

"In April this year Federal Labor released its road safety plan - Safer Drivers, Safer Cars, Safer Roads, which details our plan to specify proven safety features such as electronic stability control when selecting vehicles for the Commonwealth fleet.

"In time, as the fleet is turned over, safer cars will become part of the general fleet, making safer cars more accessible to Australian drivers and passengers.

"Roads Minister Jim Lloyd recently said

"The truth is that the road toll has stalled at 8.1 deaths per 100,000 population.

"The Howard Government should take action to ensure the safety of its employees, and in time Australian motorists, through having safer cars in the Commonwealth fleet.

"Toyota's launch today of the Aurion V6 demonstrates that Australia can produce some of the safest cars in the world, and the challenge for all Australian car makers is to make proven safety features standard on all vehicles they produce," said Senator O'Brien.
