Lines on the resignation of East Timor's Prime Minister

Reports from Dili that East Timors Prime Minister Alkatiri has resigned hopefully will help diffuse the tensions in East Timor, according to the Australian Democrats.

"Alkatiri has taken a crucial a step toward facilitating a possible national reconciliation between pro-Gusmao and pro-Alkatiri supporters," Democrats Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Senator Natasha Stott Despoja said.

"In the near-term, hopefully this situation alleviates the need for a robust Australian military response to keep the peace on the streets of Dili.

"However, we caution the Australian Government against becoming complacent in the short-term.

"The situation in Dili is still fluid and special care needs to be taken to ensure the fragile political truce that might well emerge from Alkatiris resignation can be consolidated." Senator Stott Despoja said.
