NATIONAL LANDCARE PROGRAM SUPPORTS IMPROVED WATER

MANAGEMENT IN THE GREAT ARTESIAN BASIN

DPIE98/33A

1 April 1998

The National Landcare Program will make a grant of $70 000 to develop a Strategic Management Plan for Great Artesian Basin groundwater resources, the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, John Anderson, announced today.

"The grant will go to the Great Artesian Basin Consultative Council, and will be matched by State contributions," Mr Anderson said.

"I am delighted to support the joint efforts of the stakeholders in groundwater management in the Basin in identifying priority issues and establishing a program of improved groundwater management."

"The formation of the Consultative Council will bring together the many stakeholders in the groundwater resources of the Great Artesian Basin.

"We must ensure groundwater resources are not being used beyond sustainable yields, and also address the issue of unneccessary water losses.

"More action is needed to address dropping groundwater pressures in parts of the Basin. Significant investment is needed to repair bores and drains if communities are to benefit from the groundwater in an area where there are few alternative sources of water.

"Getting the stakeholders together to jointly identify issues, priorities and necessary actions is the key to improved management of the Great Artesian Basin. This grant will allow the Council to work on a strategic management plan for the groundwater resource and related natural resources of the Basin," Mr Anderson said.

The National Landcare Program is a key vehicle for the Commonwealth Government's investments in natural resource management under the Natural Heritage Trust. The National Landcare Program is supporting a wide range of land and water management projects around Australia.
