DEFENCE HOME LOAN ASSISTANCE SCHEME PASSES THROUGH SENATE

The Shadow Minister for Defence Science, Personnel and Assisting Shadow Minister for Defence, Bob Baldwin MP, has applauded the Senate for today passing legislation aimed at assisting Defence Personnel.

Mr Baldwin said the Coalition supported both the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme Bill 2008 and the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2008 which went through the Senate earlier today.

Mr Baldwin said the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme which will allow ADF personnel to have access to a more appropriate method of home loan assistance was announced in the 2007 Budget by the then Minister for Defence, The Hon Brendan Nelson as a measure to assist with retention of Defence Personnel.

“I am pleased this legislation has moved swiftly through both houses to allow it to start on July 1,” he said.

“It was disappointing the Rudd Labor Government was so short-sighted and refused to support amendments to the bills which were aimed at strengthening the protections for the widows and their families of those killed in war-like service.”

“The amendment the Rudd Labor Government was asked to consider, yet chose to ignore, was to extend the maximum period and the maximum subsidy that applies to the surviving partner of a member of the ADF killed in warlike service, regardless of their period of service.”
