PRINCES HIGHWAY SAFETY UPGRADE NOW COMPLETE

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese and NSW Minster for Roads Michael Daley today welcomed the completion of the Princes Highway safety upgrade from South Nowra to Falls Creek.

Mr Albanese said the $23.5 million upgrade from Forest Road at South Nowra to Jervis Bay Road at Falls Creek was now open to motorists two months ahead of schedule.

"The Federal Government put forward $15 million under the AusLink Strategic Regional Program to get this important road safety upgrade completed as quickly as possible," he said.

"This upgrade is an excellent example of how the Federal and State Governments are working together to deliver real road safety benefits along major freight and tourist routes such as the Princes Highway," Mr Albanese said.

NSW Roads Minister Michael Daley said the State Government contributed $4.5 million towards the upgrade, which was later increased to $8.5 million to extend the project an extra kilometre past Falls Road.

"After careful consideration and feedback from the community we decided to extend the project by another kilometre to Jervis Bay Road - increasing the length of the upgrade to four kilometres," he said.

The work included:

Ñ Widening the highway to four lanes from south of Forest Road to Jervis Bay Road

including a duplicate two-lane bridge over Currambene Creek; Ñ The installation of a wire rope safety barrier between opposing traffic;

Ñ The upgrade of the intersections of Comberton Grange Road, Parma Road and

Falls Road; Ñ The construction of U-turn facilities in Forest Road and Parma Road to provide

residents with safe access in all directions, and

Ñ Road resurfacing at the existing bus bays along the highway.

"This project has significantly improved the condition of this road, providing motorists with a first-class four-lane road on this busy section of the Princes Highway," Mr Daley said.

"The widening work will improve traffic efficiency along the highway, and the installation of wire rope safety barriers and the intersection upgrades will significantly improve road safety," he said.

Some minor work will be finished in the coming weeks.
