Australia’s peak competition watchdog has an appointment this Friday with the Federal Parliament’s influential economics committee headed by Member for Wannon - David Hawker.

This will be the first time Graeme Samuel, the high profile chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has fronted Mr. Hawker’s Economics, Finance and Public Administration Committee.

Tomorrow’s Melbourne hearing is part of the economics committee’s review of the of the ACCC’s 2003 Annual Report.

Mr. Hawker said his committee would examine a range of issues relating to competition law and the protection of Australian consumers.

He said he would be paying particular attention to consumer issues that impacted on country people.

“This hearing is important because it will ensure the ACCC remains accountable,” Mr. Hawker said.

“It will also be an opportunity for the public to get a better understanding of the role of the commission.”

Mr. Hawker said the hearing would have a similar structure to his committee’s twice-yearly hearings with the Reserve Bank of Australia.
