Extra $1.8m for aged care services in the Top End

Aged Care Services in the Top End of the Territory will be increased by an extra 70 places after the Minister for Ageing Julie Bishop announced the results of the 2005 Aged Care Approvals Round today.

Federal member for Solomon David Tollner said that the awarding of an extra 55 places in the Darwin region will benefit older Territorians and their families and continues the Australian Government’s commitment to older Territorians.

“Once again, the Australian government has shown that it is more than prepared to look after Territorians. The total funding package announced today is almost $1.8 million and I am personally thrilled by the number of extra places that we have secured,” Mr Tollner said.

The 2005 Aged Care Approvals Round includes:

• 20 Residential places made up of 12 High Care places and 8 Low Care places worth a combined $636,944. • 10 Community Aged Care places worth $119,290. • 15 Extended Aged care places worth $574,875. • $500,000 for capital grants. • 10 EACH Dementia Packages worth $450,200.

The places have been determined on the ability of the applicants to provide quality, accessible aged care services to the ageing community and delivers on the Australian Government’s commitment of a vision of a world-class aged care system.

“These extra places will allow the local aged care industry to provide increased services for older Territorians and in particular those from non-English speaking backgrounds and older indigenous Territorians,” Mr Tollner said.

“These places are part of more than 12,000 places made Australia wide and are in addition to more than 68,600 new places already made available by the Australian government since 1996.”
