Federal Member for Mallee, John Forrest, said today that the Buloke Shire Council will receive Australian Government funding of $3,960,251 million Financial Assistance Grants in 2007-2008 for local roads and the provision of other local government services.

“These Local Government Financial Assistance Grants help councils to provide the high quality services that local communities need and expect of their local council,”

“The grants are untied so the Buloke Shire Council can allocate the funds according to local priorities.

“Funds are used by councils to provide a range of health, community, recreational, cultural and environmental services and to provide and maintain infrastructure such as roads.

“They are part of the ongoing assistance the Australian Government has provided to local communities for more than 30 years,” Mr Forrest said

“The Australian Government Minister Jim Lloyd said, “Nationally, the Australian Government has allocated $1.763 billion in financial assistance grants to local government in 2007-08, with Victorian councils receiving 23.5 percent of the national total.”

The Australian Government has increased financial assistance grant funding to local government by $76.7 million from 2006-07 and it is now $599 million higher than when the Government came to office in 1996.
