MOYNE COUNCIL RECOGNISED FOR GREENHOUSE ACHIEVEMENTS

Member for Wannon, David Hawker, today congratulated Moyne Shire Council on winning an award for greenhouse action at the Local Governments for Sustainability recognition event in Canberra.

The awards recognised the achievements of local governments across Australia involved in the Cities for Climate Protection™ (CCP) Australia programme.

Mr Hawker said that the award recognises Moyne Shire Council’s efforts in facilitating the implementation of biomass recycling and wind farms.

“CCP is an international programme delivered in Australia in partnership with the Australian Greenhouse Office in the Department of the Environment and Heritage, and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI),” Mr Hawker said.

“CCP encourages and supports local governments to initiate greenhouse gas abatement action within their own operations and communities.”

“I commend the efforts of the Moyne Council in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our region. They are one of 207 local government participants of the CCP programme, which represents almost 80 per cent of the Australian population,” he said.

More than 675 local governments participate in the CCP programme internationally, with Australia taking the lead with around 30 per cent of participants being Australian local governments.

“I am pleased that Moyne has been recognised for contributing to the 1.55 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emission reductions that councils have made during 2004-05, a 22 per cent increase on 2003-04 figures,” Mr Hawker said.

“Their achievements clearly show that local actions will not only improve the environment but also the quality of life for our community.”
