Press Release Ref: 768 Published: 15/8/2002 Title: $25 million environmental incentives program open for business

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn has announced the Federal Government’s $25 million program designed to encourage primary producers in the region to implement environmental management systems is up-and-running.

Centrelink on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is running the five-year Environmental Management Systems Incentives Program, which was announced in this year’s Federal Budget.

Mr Nairn said, “the program provides eligible primary producers in Eden-Monaro with a cash reimbursement of up to 50 per cent of costs associated with developing and implementing an EMS up to a maximum of $3000.

“The primary objectives are to increase producer awareness of EMS and their benefits, and encourage their widespread use.

“Centrelink will be informing farmers about the program, beginning with a series of print advertisements.

“I urge producers to keep a look out for further details or contact my office for assistance”, he said.

Information on EMS can also be found on www.centrelink.gov.au or by calling 1800 050 585.

Mr Nairn concluded, “The Environmental Management Systems Incentives Program is another excellent example of the Federal Government’s willingness to help improve sustainability and profitability of our primary producers while at the same time help to protect Australia’s natural resource base for future generations”.
