MEDIA RELEASE The Hon. Teresa Gambaro, MP Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence PARLSEC 55/05 Friday, 3 June 2005 Eighty new homes for Puckapunyal Parliament has today endorsed a $19.6 million Federal Government plan to build 80 new homes for Defence personnel and their families at Puckapunyal in Victoria, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Ms Teresa Gambaro, announced today. “The $19.6 million development will house Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families in high quality homes,” Ms Gambaro said. “These new homes will be in line with current Australian community standards and add greatly to the improvements being made to the housing provided in Puckapunyal. “Much of the existing housing in Puckapunyal is older stock and does not provide comfortable living for our Defence personnel and their families.” Ms Gambaro said local Member and Minister for Small Business and Tourism Fran Bailey had made strong representations on behalf of the ADF community at Puckapunyal. "As former Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Ms Bailey is well aware of the importance of supporting our ADF personnel and was instrumental in seeing improved accommodation developed. “The project will also have a positive effect on the local economy during the construction period, not only through work directly on the site but also the off-site supply of material, plant and equipment,” she said. The new houses will be built by the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on existing residential blocks that have been cleared and no infrastructure work will be required. All 80 homes are expected to be completed by November 2006, in time for Defence’s annual posting cycle. This project follows an initial 20 houses that were completed at Puckapunyal in December 2004. Nationally, DHA manages more than 17,000 properties for ADF members and their families.
