Media Release

The Hon Ian Macfarlane, MP

16 August 2005

READY' INVENTIONS A microwave instrument that accurately measures moisture levels in food is one of nine projects awarded funding under the latest round of Australian Government Commercial Ready grants.

Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane today announced Mackay-based company Callidan Instruments would receive $907,882 to develop its microwave moisture analyser as part of a national Commercial Ready funding round worth more than $8.2 million.

“Callidan has had proven success with its microwave technology, having already developed a device which accurately measures moisture content in heavy minerals such as coal and iron ore,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“With the help of the Commercial Ready grant, the company will now turn to food products, developing a fully automated, on-line, low-cost analyser that uses advanced methods of transmitting and measuring microwaves to determine moisture content.

“If successful, the technology will increase operating efficiencies, improve product quality and reduce overheads for food manufacturers.”

Other companies to receive Commercial Ready grants in this round include: • SEATRAC Pty Ltd, of Western Australia, awarded $1,603,806 to help develop a Subsea Well Intervention and Abandonment Package that enables maintenance, installation and data collection from offshore oil and gas wells.  The system will be able to operate from smaller work vessels allowing more frequent and cost-efficient operations.
