TAFE FEE INCREASES HURTING THE MOST DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS

TAFE fee increases were affecting the most disadvantaged students in Paterson, with some fees rising 188%, the Federal Member for Paterson Bob Baldwin said.

“The enormous jump in fees this year for TAFE students is an enormous disincentive for those who come from the poorest socio-economic background to try and break a cycle of poverty for themselves and their families,” Mr Baldwin said.

“The ALP say they want to create a ladder of opportunity - but this is a slide down the fireman’s pole for TAFE students facing ridiculous fee hikes.

“This also impacts on key local industries too, with a 112% jump in aged care courses and a 188% increase in building studies and a 188% jump in business courses.

“It is also extremely hypocritical when Labor tries to chant the mantra of supporting students when they not only increase TAFE fees but two ALP members voted in favour of HECS fee increases at the University of Newcastle - John Price MP and the Hon. Kayee Griffin MLC.”

“The NSW Government knocked back a three year funding agreement in which NSW would have received $1.2 billion from the Commonwealth, including an increase of $72.3 million over current funding levels,” Mr Baldwin said.

“The NSW Government’s failure to increase their own funding to TAFE is demonstrated in its cut to training by 2% in the budget. In comparison, the Federal Government provided $365 million for training in NSW in 2003 and $369 million in 2004.
