GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS EXHIBITION TOUR

Portland and Hamilton will enjoy the experiences of the exhibition Sightings and Stillness: the Great South West Walk later this year following the announcement of $77,000 by Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, today.

The exhibition features a collection of works from six artists who embarked upon a three week journey of artistic experimentation and collaboration, traversing 250 kilometres of the Great South West Walk from the Cobbobonee Forest and the Glenelg River to the oceans and estuaries of Discovery Bay.

The artists documented their journey and recorded their observations in drawings and journals, collections, sound and image recordings. Each artist focused on a different mood and aspect of the journey and their specialist skills and choice of materials have ensured a rich, multi-layered interpretation of this diverse and fragile local landscape.

Mr Hawker welcomed the impending tour which has been funded by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program, which helps exhibitions to take their tour to towns across the country.

“The Visions of Australia program funds culturally and educationally significant exhibitions to tour rural and regional areas so that wider audiences can appreciate them,” Mr Hawker said.

“Nationally, the Australian Government has committed funding of more than $700 000 to support the touring of arts and cultural exhibitions under the most recent round of Visions’ funding.

“This is part of a wider commitment to ensure all Australians can participate in and enjoy access to Australia’s rich cultural collections.”

The exhibition Sightings and Stillness: the Great South West Walk will visit the Portland CEMA Arts Centre and the Hamilton Art Gallery later in 2007 and early in 2008.

The Visions of Australia program provides assistance to museums, galleries, libraries, archives and community organisations, to develop and tour exhibitions nationally.
