2000/2001 Consolidated Financial Statements The Howard Government has recorded an operating surplus for the fourth consecutive year, the Minister for Finance and Administration, Senator Nick Minchin, announced today.

This $8.1 billion consolidated accrual operating surplus is one of the highlights of the Commonwealth’s 2000-01 Consolidated Financial Statements tabled today.

Continuing operating surpluses have allowed the Government to repay $32.4 billion in debt since 1996, which represents a 26 percent reduction. Responsible fiscal management by this Government is ensuring the next generation of Australians will not be burdened with paying back debt of a prior generation.

The Consolidated Financial Statements are a key component of the Government’s financial reporting, which show whole-of-government results inclusive of all Commonwealth sectors. An electronic version of the 2000-01 Consolidated Financial Statements can be found at: www.finance.gov.au.
