No negotiation on custodianship

The Australian Democrats will not consider acknowledgment of Aboriginal ‘stewardship’ in the constituti onal preamble as a replacement for full recognition of the status of indigenous people as prior owners and custodians of the land, said Republic spokesperson, Senator Natasha Stott Despoja.

“We have always said our bottom line includes these terms, and the Prime Minister is aware of that,” said Senator Stott Despoja.

“Indigenous people deserve a place in the preamble which respects their past and continuing status with regard to the land and the nation.

“The Australian Democrats will not shy away from this, and nor should the Prime Minister,” concluded Senator Stott Despoja.
