GST AD CAMPAIGN TOPS $19 MILLION FOR 1 5 DAY SPLURGE

The Government spent $19.94 million, or $1.3 million of taxpayers’ money a day on their tawdry GST advertising campaign, in the 15 day lead-up to John Howard’s election announcement, Public Administration and Government Services spokesman, S enator John Faulkner said today.

“The Treasury Portfolio Additional Estimates statement tabled this week, reveals the final cost of this massive expenditure of taxpayers finds.

“The Government spent $55,389 per hour in the 15 day run-up to the election, promoting their tax proposal. The Government lost 19 seats to the Labor Party, and received a massive rebuff, with a 61 per cent anti-GST vote in the Senate,” Senator Faulkner said.

Senator Faulkner said the Liberals’ $19.9 million campaign included glossy mail outs, a flawed information hotline, and a massive TV advertising blitz, the most intensive advertising campaign ever launched by a Government in so short a period of time.

“The Government has still not announced any move to tighten the rules surrounding such expenditure of taxpayers’ money, as recommended by the Auditor-General, Mr Pat Barratt.

“Given the size of the expenditure and the politically partisan nature of the tax campaign, Mr Howard has no option but to insist Federal Liberal Director, Mr Lynton Crosby, writes out a $19.9 million check to the Collector of Public Moneys, and pay the Australian taxpayers back for this massive and unconscionable rort,” Senator Faulkner said.
