MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER FA136 31 October 2005

NEW DELHI TERROR ATTACKS

I condemn in the strongest terms the heinous terror attacks which occurred in New Delhi on 29 October.

This senseless slaughter of innocent civilians, who were going about their lives peacefully in and around New Delhi’s markets, provides a stark reminder of the grave threat posed by terrorism and the importance of broad regional co-operation in the vital battle against terrorism.

I understand a group called Inquilab has claimed responsibility for the attack. There can be no justification for the murder and maiming of innocents.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the people of India at this difficult time. The attacks come at a time when India is still responding to the effects of the earthquake that devastated South Asia earlier this month.
