Truss announces Dairy Australia Board membership

The first board for Dairy Australia, the new service provider company for the Australian dairy industry, was announced today by the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Warren Truss.

Mr Truss said that for the first time a single entity - Dairy Australia - would be responsible for providing the industry with a range of important services, including those relating to R&D, trade and promotional activities.

"The formation of Dairy Australia provides a valuable opportunity to streamline service delivery, as well as help ensure the industry responds more quickly to changing market circumstances," Mr Truss said.

"Dairy Australia is scheduled to commence operations on 1 July and will play an extremely important role in helping our industry take full advantage of a growing world market. The new company will work closely with all its sectors to take on new challenges and help boost growth and profitability.

"With this in mind, the Government has ensured the inaugural Board has the corporate experience, business acumen and industry understanding needed to provide Dairy Australia with a strong, commercial focus."

The inaugural Board members are: Patrick Rowley as Chairman, Dr Anne Astin, Sarah Crooke, John Doyle, Dr Barry Kitchen, John Massey, Stephen O'Rourke and Max Roberts.

"This experienced team has the required leadership, business, corporate governance, and milk production and processing skills, as well as expertise in science, R&D, international marketing and trade development essential if Dairy Australia is to become an innovative and successful service provider," Mr Truss said.

Mr Truss said Mr Rowley is ideally suited as Dairy Australia's Chairman, and will bring to the position a good mix of skills and unparalleled experience in industry leadership.

"Mr Rowley's current position, as Chairman of the Interim Advisory Board, provides him with a detailed understanding of what is involved in preparing and implementing Dairy Australia's key corporate documents," he said.

"I would also like to commend his contributions as President of the Australian Dairy Industry Council and Australian Dairy Farmers, positions he has now vacated to head up the Dairy Australia Board. Mr Rowley has helped steer the Australian dairy industry through some very significant challenges in recent years, and is well respected in government circles and

within the dairy community - here and overseas.

"I believe he, and his fellow board members, will play a crucial role in ensuring Dairy Australia delivers the types of services the industry needs to remain a major exporter, and the mainstay of regional communities in many parts of Australia."
