AUSTRALIAN SENATE

SELECT COMMITTEE ON SUPERANNUATION

MEDIA RELEASE

Inquiry into Portability of Superannuation - Upcoming Program of Hearings

The Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Superannuation, Senator John Watson, today confirmed that the Committee will hold two public hearings later this week in connection with the Committee’s inquiry into portability of superannuation. A list of the dates and details of the public hearings is as follows:

Thursday 31 July, 9.00am - 5.15pm, NSW Parliament House, Sydney

Friday 1 August, 9.00am - 3.30pm, Victorian Parliament House, Melbourne

The Committee has received 23 submissions to date in response to its inquiry from a variety of individuals and organisations, including peak bodies in the superannuation industry, superannuation funds or fund trustees, professional financial organisations, financial service providers, unions, employer groups, as well as Commonwealth government departments.

Commenting on the hearings program, Senator Watson indicated: ‘The parties making submissions have raised a broad range of important issues in relation to portability that the Committee is keen to explore further. While many of these issues reiterate matters raised during the Committee’s earlier inquiries into choice of superannuation, the Committee must examine them afresh under this new reference.’

The program for the two hearing days is attached.

The Committee is due to report on its inquiry to the Senate by 21 August 2003.
