John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee said today he was very pleased that a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit will soon begin offering services from Bendigo as part of expanded access to MRI negotiated by the Australian Government.

Mr Forrest said that the government had approved Medicare benefits for MRIs to be offered by the Bendigo Health Care Group at the Bendigo Hospital.

“This is great news for the residents of the Mallee electorate as the decision will not only make MRI technology much more accessible for people but would also make the service more affordable.”

“Getting a regional MRI service is really good news and it is satisfying that the government has struck a deal with the MRI provider to limit the costs of MRI scans for many patients.”

“There will be no out of pocket expenses charged for Medicare MRI scans taken at the Bendigo Hospital Service, and that’s great news for the community.”

“It will also mean significantly less travel for many people requiring MRI scans, reducing not only the expense of accessing this vital service, but the stress factor in making arrangements to travel either to Melbourne or Ballarat.”

“We are committed to increasing the availability and quality of health services across Australia and this new MRI machine will deliver important health benefits to many residents of the Mallee electorate”.

“The next step is to get an MRI service established in Mildura and I will not rest until this is available,” said Mr Forrest
