Australians generous - Rudd, Howard stingy, say Greens

2nd Nov 07

While Australians are second only to the Irish in public donations to foreign aid, both the Howard Coalition and Rudd Labor are super stingy by world standards when it comes to foreign aid commitments, Greens Leader Bob Brown said in Melbourne today.

“The Greens are calling for Australia to match Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands with a minimum 0.7% of GDP generosity to help eradicate global poverty and misery by 2010,” Senator Brown said.

“The Howard government has made Australia a top-rank miser with only 0.3% of GDP for foreign aid. Kevin Rudd’s commitment of 0.5% by 2015 is small minded, distant and shows foreign aid will be

low priority under Rudd Labor,” Senator Brown said.

“If just 6% of the trillion dollars being spent globally on armaments and defence were diverted to ensuring all children had clean water, enough food and a school to go to this world would be a far safer, happier and more decent place,” Senator Brown said.
